One of the popular psychological developmental models states we have 8 developmental stages from birth to death if one lives a full life. Each developmental stage comes with its own physical, psychological, emotional, intellectual and social developmental tasks.
It is interesting to find out that an infant needs to develop basic self esteem. How does an infant accomplish this monumental task when adults struggle with having good self esteem? An infant can’t do this on his/her own. S/he depends on the care giver’s gaze of wonder and awe. The infant senses this awesomeness from the care giver and begins to develop the sense of self esteem.
This is really important for us to understand. The care giver feels the wonder of this child, not because the baby accomplished something grand, but because the baby is simply born and is breathing. Our basic self esteem doesn’t depend on our status, accomplishments, or talents. Our self esteem is from the fact that we are breathing human beings.
I see and hear too often that people feel less than somebody. If we compare ourselves to others, we can either look up at people who have better house, better job, better look, etc. or look down at people who seem less than us with something. Please remember that nobody in this world shares your finger print or brain print. You are your own unique being and you can’t compare with others to see if you matter. You simply do.
