About 15 percent of people In America meet the criteria for the above personality types. Not everyone with the above personality type causes high conflicts. It is important to recognize the ones who do as they can cause a huge amount of trouble, heartache and even your life.

According to Bill Eddy LCSW Esq, they have 4 primary characteristics.

  • all or nothing thinking
  • intense or unmanaged emotions
  • extreme behavior or threats
  • preoccupation with blaming others

If you know someone with these traits, please do not tell them that they have high conflict personality. It maybe perceived as a threat to them and you can become their target.

Instead you can follow these 4 steps to deal with them.

  1. Connect with empathy, attention and respect: I can see you are very frustrated.
  2. Choices: I can talk with you now for 5 minutes or I can have 15 minutes with you tomorrow morning. It is up to you.
  3. Respond to misinformation clearly with short sentence: That bill was paid this morning.
  4. Set boundary: I am willing to discuss this with you when you are calm.  (Then walk away)
